Acne Treatment in Vaughan: A Clear-Skin Plan That Actually Works

Acne is one of the most frustrating skin concerns because it affects so much more than your skin. It can change how you feel about photos, how much makeup you wear, and even whether you want to go out. And despite what the internet suggests, there is rarely one product that fixes it overnight.

At our med spa in Vaughan, acne is one of the concerns we treat most often, in teens, in adults in their twenties and thirties, and increasingly in women dealing with hormonal breakouts later in life. This guide explains what is actually happening in your skin, which professional treatments help, and how to build a routine that supports clear skin long term.

What causes acne?

Acne develops when four things come together in the skin:

  1. Excess oil production. Hormones, stress and genetics can increase sebum.
  2. Clogged pores. Dead skin cells do not shed properly and mix with oil to block the pore.
  3. Bacteria. Acne-related bacteria thrive in the blocked, oxygen-poor pore.
  4. Inflammation. The body responds to the blockage and bacteria, creating red, swollen and sometimes painful breakouts.

Understanding these four factors is important, because effective acne treatment needs to address all of them, not just one. A product that dries out oil but does nothing for inflammation, or a scrub that irritates the skin without clearing pores, can make things worse.

Types of acne

Not all breakouts are the same, and the type of acne you have affects how we treat it.

  • Blackheads and whiteheads (comedones): non-inflamed clogged pores, common on the nose, chin and forehead.
  • Papules and pustules: red, inflamed bumps, sometimes with a white centre.
  • Nodules and cysts: deep, painful lumps under the skin that can lead to scarring.
  • Hormonal acne: often around the jawline, chin and lower face, flaring with the menstrual cycle.
  • Body acne: on the back, chest and shoulders, often linked to sweat, friction and products.

Severe cystic acne may need support from a doctor or dermatologist alongside professional skin treatments. We will always tell you honestly if we think medical care is the right next step.

Professional acne treatments at a med spa

Professional treatments work alongside your home routine to clear congestion, calm inflammation and speed up healing. These are the treatments we use most for acne at Balanced Beauty.

Acne facials

Our Balanced Acne Detox Facial is designed for congested, breakout-prone skin. It combines deep cleansing, exfoliation, careful extractions and calming, antibacterial products. For skin that is both breaking out and sensitive or red, our Oxygen RX Acne & Rosacea Facial offers a gentler approach. Our Extraction Facial focuses on clearing stubborn congestion.

Chemical peels

Chemical peels are one of the most effective tools for acne. Salicylic acid is oil-soluble, so it can work inside the pore to dissolve congestion. Mandelic acid is gentle and well suited to sensitive or deeper skin tones. A series of peels can reduce breakouts, refine texture and fade the marks acne leaves behind. Learn more on our chemical peels page.

Blue LED light therapy

Blue light targets acne-causing bacteria and helps calm active breakouts without any downtime. It is often added to a facial or used as a standalone treatment between appointments. Red light, meanwhile, supports healing and reduces inflammation. See our LED light therapy page.

Microneedling for acne scars

Once active acne is under control, microneedling can help improve the texture left behind by scarring. It stimulates the skin's natural collagen production to gradually smooth indentations. Microneedling is not performed over active breakouts, which is why we focus on clearing first. Read more on our microneedling page.

Building an acne-friendly home routine

Professional treatments get things moving, but what you do every day matters even more. A good acne routine is usually simpler than people expect.

Morning:

  1. Gentle cleanser suited to your skin
  2. Targeted treatment serum if recommended
  3. Lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturizer
  4. Broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher

Evening:

  1. Cleanse, double cleansing if you wore makeup or sunscreen
  2. Active treatment such as an exfoliating acid or recommended retinoid, introduced slowly
  3. Moisturizer to support your skin barrier

GlyMed Plus offers professional products that are well suited to acne-prone skin, including the Serious Action Skin Wash and targeted treatments from the Serious Action line. You can browse what we carry in our shop, but we will never pressure you to buy. If what you already use works, we will tell you.

Common acne mistakes

Many of the clients we see in Vaughan have been unintentionally making their acne worse. These are the most common habits we help people change.

  • Over-cleansing and over-drying. Stripping the skin can trigger more oil and irritation.
  • Picking and squeezing. This pushes bacteria deeper, increases inflammation and raises the risk of scarring and dark marks.
  • Switching products too often. Most acne treatments need six to eight weeks to show their effect.
  • Skipping moisturizer. Even oily skin needs hydration to keep the barrier healthy.
  • Skipping sunscreen. UV exposure darkens post-acne marks and makes them last longer.
  • Dirty phone screens, pillowcases and makeup brushes. Small habits add up.

Hormonal acne in adults

Many women are surprised to experience acne for the first time in their late twenties, thirties or forties. Hormonal acne often shows up along the jawline and chin and tends to flare around the menstrual cycle. Stress, sleep and diet can all play a role.

Professional treatments and a consistent routine can make a big difference, but hormonal acne may also benefit from a conversation with your doctor. We take a whole-picture approach and are happy to work alongside your healthcare provider.

Dealing with acne marks and scars

After a breakout heals, it can leave behind two different things:

  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation: flat brown or red marks. These usually fade with time, sun protection, gentle exfoliation and treatments like peels.
  • Atrophic scarring: indentations in the skin. These need treatments that stimulate collagen, such as microneedling.

The most important thing you can do to prevent both is to avoid picking and to treat breakouts early.

How long does it take to clear acne?

Honest answer: it depends. Mild congestion can improve noticeably within a few weeks. Moderate inflammatory acne usually takes two to three months of consistent treatment to settle. Scarring treatment takes longer, as collagen rebuilds over several months.

Most clients see progress within the first few appointments. We take photos at the start so you can see the change for yourself, because day to day it can be hard to notice. You can see real client progress on our results page. Results vary from person to person.

A typical acne plan at Balanced Beauty

Every plan is customized, but a common approach looks like this:

  1. Consultation and skin assessment. We look at your acne type, triggers and routine.
  2. Clearing phase. Acne facials or peels every two to four weeks, often with LED.
  3. Home routine. Simple, targeted products used consistently.
  4. Maintenance. Monthly facials to keep pores clear once your skin is stable.
  5. Scar treatment if needed. Microneedling once active acne is under control.

Lifestyle factors that can influence breakouts

Skin does not exist in isolation, and while lifestyle rarely causes acne on its own, it can make breakouts more or less likely. These are the factors we talk about most with clients in Vaughan.

Sleep and stress. Stress raises cortisol, which can increase oil production and inflammation. Many clients notice flare-ups during exams, busy seasons at work or after poor sleep. Protecting your sleep is one of the simplest things you can do for your skin.

Diet. Research suggests that for some people, high-glycemic foods and dairy may be linked to breakouts. This varies widely between individuals. If you notice a pattern, it is worth paying attention to, but there is no need for extreme restriction.

Exercise and sweat. Movement is great for skin circulation, but sweat left on the skin, tight headbands and gym equipment can contribute to congestion. Cleanse soon after workouts, and wash athletic wear regularly.

Hair products and makeup. Heavy oils, pomades and some foundations can clog pores along the hairline and jaw. Look for non-comedogenic formulas and remove makeup thoroughly every night.

Touching your face. Resting your chin on your hand, holding your phone against your cheek and absent-minded picking all transfer oil and bacteria.

None of these are about blame. They are simply small levers you can adjust while professional treatment does the heavy lifting.

Frequently asked questions

Will a facial make my acne worse?

A properly customized acne facial should not. Some clients see a brief purge after deep extractions, which settles within a few days.

Can I get a peel if I have sensitive skin?

Yes. Mandelic acid and other gentle options are well suited to sensitive skin. We always start conservatively.

Do I need to stop my prescription before treatment?

Some prescriptions, especially isotretinoin and strong retinoids, affect which treatments are safe. Always tell us what you are using.

Is acne treatment only for teens?

Not at all. Many of our acne clients are adults, including those experiencing hormonal breakouts for the first time.
