Chemical Peels in Vaughan: Which Peel Is Right for Your Skin?

The phrase "chemical peel" makes a lot of people nervous. Many imagine red, raw skin and days hiding at home. In reality, most chemical peels are far gentler than that, and they are one of the most effective treatments available for dullness, uneven tone, acne, fine lines and texture.

At our med spa in Vaughan, chemical peels are a cornerstone of our skin treatments. This guide explains how peels work, the differences between the peels we offer, what to expect during and after, and how to choose the right peel for your skin and your schedule.

What is a chemical peel?

A chemical peel is a professional treatment that applies an exfoliating solution to the skin. The solution loosens the bonds between dead skin cells so they shed more quickly, revealing fresher, smoother skin underneath. Depending on the strength and type of acid, peels can also clear pores, reduce pigmentation, and stimulate the skin's natural renewal and collagen production.

Peels are generally grouped by depth:

  • Superficial peels work on the outermost layer. Little to no visible peeling, minimal downtime.
  • Medium-depth peels reach slightly deeper for more significant change in pigmentation and texture, with a few days of visible peeling.

At Balanced Beauty, we focus on superficial and light-to-medium peels that deliver real results with manageable downtime. Every peel is customized to your skin type, concerns and lifestyle.

The peels we offer and what they treat

Mandelic Acid Peel (40%)

Mandelic acid has a larger molecule than many other acids, so it penetrates the skin more slowly and evenly. That makes it one of the gentlest and best-tolerated options, especially for sensitive skin and deeper skin tones. It is excellent for acne, congestion, uneven tone and dullness.

Glycolic Acid Peel (30%)

Glycolic acid has a very small molecule, so it works efficiently to brighten and smooth. It is a great choice for dullness, fine lines, rough texture and mild pigmentation, particularly in normal to oily skin that is not overly sensitive.

Salicylic Acid Peel (20% or 25%)

Salicylic acid is oil-soluble, which means it can travel into the pore and dissolve the oil and debris that cause breakouts. It is one of the best peels for acne, blackheads and oily skin. It also has a calming effect on inflammation.

Jessner's Peel

A blend of acids that offers a stronger exfoliation. It can help with stubborn pigmentation, acne and texture, and typically produces visible peeling for a few days.

TCA Peel (13%)

Trichloroacetic acid at this strength provides a deeper refresh for pigmentation, sun damage and fine lines. Expect a few days of peeling. Careful skin preparation and aftercare are essential.

GlyMed AHA No-Downtime Peel

Perfect for busy schedules or a first peel. It brightens and refreshes without visible peeling, so you can return to your day right away.

Choosing the right peel

Here is a simple way to think about it:

  • Acne and oily skin: salicylic or mandelic
  • Sensitive skin or deeper skin tones: mandelic, or a customized gentle peel
  • Dullness and fine lines: glycolic or the GlyMed AHA No-Downtime Peel
  • Pigmentation and sun damage: a series of mandelic or glycolic peels, or Jessner's or TCA for stubborn concerns
  • No time for downtime: GlyMed AHA No-Downtime Peel

The best way to decide is a consultation. We look at your skin, ask about your routine and history, and recommend the peel that gives you the best result with the least risk.

What to expect during a peel

A peel appointment at our Vaughan clinic usually takes 45 minutes to an hour. Here is the typical flow:

  1. Consultation and skin check
  2. Thorough cleanse and degreasing so the acid can penetrate evenly
  3. Application of the peel solution in timed layers
  4. A warm, tingling or prickly sensation for a few minutes, which we monitor closely
  5. Neutralizing or removing the peel as required
  6. Calming products, hydration and SPF

Most clients find the sensation very manageable. We use a fan and check in with you throughout.

What happens after a chemical peel?

After a superficial peel, your skin may look slightly pink and feel tight for a day. Some light flaking can occur around day two to four.

After a medium-depth peel such as Jessner's or TCA, expect visible peeling that typically begins around day two or three and lasts several days. Skin underneath will look fresh and smooth. Total peeling time ranges from one to seven days depending on the peel.

Aftercare: the most important part

Good aftercare protects your results and your skin.

  • Do not pick or pull flaking skin. Let it shed naturally to avoid marks.
  • Use gentle products only. A mild cleanser and a calming moisturizer.
  • Wear SPF 30 or higher every day. Freshly peeled skin is more sensitive to the sun.
  • Avoid retinoids and exfoliating acids for about a week, or as advised.
  • Skip saunas, hot yoga and intense workouts for 48 hours.
  • Avoid sun exposure and tanning.

The best time of year for chemical peels in Ontario

Fall and winter are ideal for peels in Southern Ontario. The sun is weaker, days are shorter and it is easier to avoid UV exposure while your skin heals. That said, gentle peels can be done year-round with strict sun protection. If you have a vacation or big event coming up, plan your peel at least one to two weeks ahead.

How many peels will I need?

Some concerns improve after a single peel, especially dullness. For acne, pigmentation and texture, a series of one to three peels spaced about four weeks apart typically gives the best results. Many clients then maintain with a peel every season. Results vary from person to person.

Who should not get a chemical peel?

We postpone peels if you:

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding (some peels are not appropriate)
  • Have used isotretinoin in the past six months
  • Have active cold sores, infection or open wounds
  • Have a recent sunburn or tan
  • Have recently had waxing, laser or other aggressive treatment on the area

Always tell us about your medications and health history so we can choose safely.

Peels and darker skin tones

Deeper skin tones can absolutely benefit from chemical peels, but the choice of acid and strength matters, because inflamed skin is more prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Mandelic acid and carefully customized peels are often the best fit. Preparing the skin in advance and being diligent with sun protection afterward are key.

Combining peels with other treatments

Peels pair well with:

  • Medical facials for maintenance between peels
  • LED light therapy to calm and support healing
  • A professional home routine to extend results

We will plan your treatments so they complement each other rather than overload your skin.

Preparing your skin before a peel

The days and weeks before a peel matter almost as much as the peel itself. Well-prepared skin peels more evenly, heals faster and is less likely to react.

For two weeks before your appointment, avoid tanning, sun beds and self-tanner, and wear a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every day. If you have a history of pigmentation, we may recommend a gentle brightening product for a few weeks beforehand to help prepare the skin.

Stop retinoids, prescription creams and strong exfoliating acids three to five days before your peel, unless we have advised otherwise. Avoid waxing, threading or depilatory creams on the face for about a week. If you are prone to cold sores, let us know, as a peel can sometimes trigger an outbreak and preventive care may be helpful.

On the day, arrive with clean skin if you can. We will cleanse and prepare your skin thoroughly before applying anything.

Finally, think about your calendar. For deeper peels like Jessner's or TCA, plan for a quieter week with no major events, photos or travel to sunny destinations. For the GlyMed AHA No-Downtime Peel, you can usually go straight back to your day. The full checklist is on our pre-care page.
