Laser Hair Removal in Vaughan: The Complete Guide for Every Skin Tone

If you have ever done the math on razors, waxing appointments and the time you spend planning your week around hair, you already know why laser hair removal is one of the most requested treatments at our med spa in Vaughan. It is not a luxury reserved for a few people anymore. It is a practical, long-term way to reduce unwanted hair on almost every area of the body, for almost every skin tone.

This guide is the conversation we have with clients every day in our treatment room at 700 Chrislea Road. We will walk through how laser hair removal actually works, who it is right for, how many sessions most people need, what it feels like, what it costs, and exactly how to prepare so you get the most out of every appointment. No hype, no pressure, just honest information so you can decide what is right for you.

How laser hair removal works

Laser hair removal uses concentrated light energy to target the pigment (melanin) inside the hair follicle. The light is absorbed by the pigment and converted into heat. That heat travels down the hair shaft into the follicle, damaging the parts responsible for growing new hair. The surrounding skin is protected by cooling and by carefully chosen settings, so the energy goes where it is needed.

The key thing to understand is that hair grows in cycles. At any given moment, only a portion of your hair is in the active growth phase (called anagen). That is the phase when the hair is still attached to the follicle and the laser can do its work. Hairs in the resting or shedding phase are not affected in the same way. This is why laser hair removal is always done as a series of sessions spaced weeks apart: each visit catches a new group of hairs as they enter the growth phase.

Over a full series, most clients see a significant, lasting reduction in hair density. The hair that does grow back tends to be finer, lighter and slower to appear. We describe this as permanent hair reduction rather than permanent hair removal, because bodies change over time with hormones, age and life events, and occasional maintenance sessions are normal. Results vary from person to person.

Is laser hair removal safe for darker skin tones?

This is one of the most common questions we hear in Vaughan, and it is an important one. Older laser technology struggled to tell the difference between pigment in the hair and pigment in the skin, which made treatment riskier for medium and deeper skin tones.

Modern laser systems and careful technique have changed that. At Balanced Beauty, every treatment begins with an assessment of your skin type and your hair colour and thickness. Settings are tailored to you, not pulled from a generic chart. We start conservatively, check how your skin responds, and adjust from there. This approach allows us to treat a wide range of skin tones comfortably and safely.

What laser hair removal does need is contrast between the hair and the skin, and pigment in the hair itself. Very light blonde, grey, white or red hair has little or no melanin for the laser to target, so results on those hair colours are limited. We will always be honest about this during your consultation, rather than selling you a package that is unlikely to deliver.

Which areas can be treated?

Almost any area with unwanted hair can be treated, except directly around the eyes. Popular areas at our Vaughan clinic include:

  • Face: upper lip, chin, sideburns, full face and men's beard line
  • Neck: front, back or full neck
  • Underarms: one of the fastest and most popular areas
  • Arms: half arms, full arms and fingers or knuckles
  • Chest and back: full chest including shoulders
  • Bikini: bikini line or full Brazilian
  • Legs: half legs or full legs
  • Buttocks

Many clients start with one area, see how their skin responds, and then add more. Others choose our Full Body (Face + Body) session from the start, which covers everything in a single visit and is often the most efficient choice for people who want to be done with shaving altogether. For clients who want complete flexibility, our One Year Unlimited option covers face and body for a full year.

How many sessions will I need?

Most clients need 6 to 12 sessions for their best results. Where you fall in that range depends on several factors:

  • The area being treated. Underarms and legs often respond quickly. Hormonally influenced areas like the chin and neck can take longer.
  • Your hair colour and thickness. Dark, coarse hair absorbs energy well and often responds faster.
  • Hormones. Conditions such as PCOS, or hormonal changes from pregnancy or menopause, can stimulate new growth and may mean more sessions or periodic maintenance.
  • Consistency. Keeping to your recommended schedule matters. Skipping sessions means missing hairs as they enter the growth phase.

Sessions are typically spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart, depending on the area. Facial hair grows faster, so face sessions are often closer together. Body areas usually sit at the longer end of the range.

After your initial series, some clients come back once or twice a year for a quick touch-up. Others find they rarely need one. We will track your progress and tell you honestly when you have reached the point of diminishing returns.

What does laser hair removal feel like?

Most people describe it as a quick snap, like a rubber band, or a warm prickly sensation. Sensitivity varies by area. The upper lip and bikini area tend to be more sensitive, while legs and arms are usually very comfortable.

Comfort is a priority in our treatment room. We use cooling to soothe the skin during treatment, and we will check in with you throughout. Many clients are surprised by how manageable it is, especially compared to waxing. Sessions are fast: an upper lip or chin can take around 10 minutes, a full face about 25 minutes, and a full body session about an hour.

Sensitivity also tends to decrease as your series goes on, because there is less hair absorbing energy with each visit.

How to prepare for your first session

Preparation is simple, but it matters. Following these steps protects your skin and helps the laser target the follicle effectively.

  1. Shave the area 24 hours before. The hair should be removed from the surface but still present in the follicle. Do not wax, pluck, thread or use depilatory creams for at least four weeks before treatment, because these remove the hair from the root and leave nothing for the laser to target.
  2. Avoid sun exposure and tanning. Tanned skin has more pigment, which increases the risk of irritation. Avoid sun beds, self-tanner and prolonged sun for two weeks before your session.
  3. Arrive with clean skin. Skip lotions, deodorant, makeup and oils on the treatment area on the day of your appointment.
  4. Tell us about medications. Some medications, including certain antibiotics, acne medications and products that increase light sensitivity, may affect timing. Let us know about anything new.
  5. Pause active skincare on the area. Retinoids and strong exfoliating acids should be stopped for several days before treatment on the face.

You can find the full checklist on our pre-care page.

What to expect after treatment

Right after your session, the treated skin may look a little pink, and you might see small raised bumps around the follicles. This is a normal response and usually settles within a few hours to a day. It can feel similar to a mild sunburn.

Over the following one to three weeks, you will notice treated hairs pushing out of the follicle and shedding. This can look like regrowth, but it is actually the damaged hair working its way out. Do not pluck these hairs. Gentle exfoliation in the shower after the first few days can help them shed.

For aftercare:

  • Keep the area clean and avoid heavy products for 24 hours
  • Skip hot tubs, saunas, steam rooms and intense workouts for 24 to 48 hours
  • Wear a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher on exposed areas every day
  • Avoid sun exposure and tanning between sessions
  • Shave between sessions if needed, but never wax or pluck

The complete guide lives on our post-care page.

How much does laser hair removal cost in Vaughan?

Pricing depends on the size of the area. At Balanced Beauty, small areas such as the upper lip, chin or sideburns start at $35 per session, a full face is $99, and our Full Body (Face + Body) session is $350. Our One Year Unlimited (Face + Body) option is designed for clients who want maximum flexibility for twelve months.

When comparing prices, look at the full picture: the experience and training of the person performing your treatment, whether settings are customized to your skin, how comfortable the clinic is, and whether you are being encouraged to buy more than you need. We would rather you buy fewer sessions and come back because you trust us than lock you into a package that does not fit your goals.

You can see the full price list for every area on our laser hair removal page.

Laser hair removal versus waxing and shaving

Shaving is quick and cheap in the moment, but it is endless. Hair grows back within a day or two, and many people deal with razor burn, ingrown hairs and dark shadowing, especially on the bikini line, underarms and men's necks.

Waxing lasts longer, but it requires growing hair out between appointments, can be painful, and may cause irritation and ingrown hairs over time. It also works against laser: because waxing removes the hair at the root, you cannot wax during a laser series.

Laser hair removal is an investment up front, but over time it typically costs less than years of waxing appointments and razor refills. Many clients also tell us that the reduction in ingrown hairs and razor bumps is the biggest change of all. It is one of those treatments where people often say they wish they had started sooner.

Who should not have laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal is not right for everyone at every moment. We will postpone treatment if you:

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have an active infection, cold sore or open wound in the area
  • Have a recent tan or sunburn
  • Are taking medications that cause light sensitivity
  • Have certain medical conditions that affect healing

During your consultation, we will review your health history carefully. If laser is not the right choice for you right now, we will tell you and suggest alternatives.

Why clients choose Balanced Beauty in Vaughan

We are a boutique med spa, not a high-volume chain. That means you see the same licensed specialist each time, your settings and progress are tracked carefully, and you never feel rushed. Our clients come from across Vaughan, Woodbridge, Maple, Kleinburg and the wider GTA, and many of them first came in for laser before discovering our facials and skin treatments.

Our approach is simple: honest advice, customized treatment and a calm, clean space where you feel comfortable asking questions. We were recognized as Highly Recommended on Fresha in 2026, and our reviews come from real clients who keep coming back.

Frequently asked questions

Is laser hair removal permanent?

It offers permanent hair reduction. Most clients see a lasting reduction after a full series, with occasional maintenance as hormones change over time. Results vary.

Can I shave between sessions?

Yes. Shaving is the only hair removal method you should use during your series. Avoid waxing, plucking, threading and depilatory creams.

When will I see results?

Many clients notice less regrowth after the first two or three sessions, with steady improvement across the series.

Can men get laser hair removal?

Absolutely. Beard line, neck, chest, back and shoulders are popular areas for men in Vaughan, especially for reducing razor bumps and ingrown hairs.

Do I need a consultation first?

We recommend it, especially if you have a deeper skin tone, a hormonal condition or are unsure which areas to start with. Consultations are free.
