LED Light Therapy in Vaughan: Red Light, Blue Light and What They Really Do

Imagine a skin treatment where you simply lie back, close your eyes and relax under a soft glow, while your skin quietly gets to work calming inflammation, fighting breakouts and supporting collagen. No needles, no peeling, no downtime. That is LED light therapy, and it is one of the most underrated treatments we offer at our med spa in Vaughan.

In this guide, we explain how LED light therapy works, the difference between red and blue light, who benefits, and how it pairs with other treatments for better results.

What is LED light therapy?

LED stands for light-emitting diode. LED light therapy uses specific wavelengths of visible light to trigger natural processes in the skin. Unlike lasers or UV light, LED light does not heat or damage the skin, and it does not cause tanning. Instead, skin cells absorb the light energy and respond in ways that support healing, calming and renewal.

Different colours of light correspond to different wavelengths, and each wavelength reaches a different depth in the skin and produces a different effect. The two most widely used and well-researched colours in skin care are red and blue.

Red light therapy

Red light penetrates relatively deeply into the skin. It is associated with:

  • Supporting collagen production, for smoother, firmer-looking skin
  • Reducing inflammation and redness
  • Accelerating healing after treatments like microneedling or peels
  • Improving overall radiance and skin tone
  • Calming sensitive or reactive skin

Red light is a favourite for clients focused on healthy aging, recovery and calm. It is gentle enough for sensitive skin and is often used to support results from other treatments.

Blue light therapy

Blue light works closer to the skin's surface. It is best known for:

  • Targeting acne-causing bacteria
  • Calming active breakouts
  • Helping regulate oily, congested skin

Blue light is an excellent addition to an acne plan, especially for clients who want to reduce inflammation without drying or irritating products. It is often combined with acne facials or peels.

Who is LED light therapy good for?

LED is one of the most universally suitable treatments we offer. It can benefit:

  • Clients with acne and congestion (blue light)
  • Clients with redness, rosacea-prone or sensitive skin (red light)
  • Clients focused on fine lines and firmness (red light)
  • Clients recovering from microneedling or peels (red light)
  • Anyone wanting a relaxing, no-downtime boost

Because LED does not rely on heat or target pigment, it is suitable for all skin tones.

What to expect during an LED session

An LED session at Balanced Beauty takes 20 to 30 minutes of light time, with appointments booked at 30 minutes.

  1. Your skin is cleansed so the light can reach it without any barrier from makeup or sunscreen.
  2. Protective eye covering is placed for comfort.
  3. The LED panel is positioned close to your face.
  4. You relax while the light does its work. Most clients find it calming, and some even fall asleep.
  5. Your skin is finished with hydration and SPF.

There is no pain, no heat discomfort and no downtime. You can put makeup on and return to your day immediately.

How many LED sessions do you need?

LED works best with consistency. A single session can leave the skin looking calmer and more radiant, but the deeper benefits come from a series.

  • For acne: many clients do blue light once or twice a week for several weeks, often alongside acne facials.
  • For anti-aging and redness: a series of red light sessions over several weeks, followed by regular maintenance.
  • For recovery: one red light session shortly after microneedling or a peel to support healing.

We will recommend a realistic schedule based on your skin and goals. Results vary from person to person.

LED as an add-on

One of the most popular ways to enjoy LED is as an add-on to another treatment. Adding LED to a facial, for example, can help calm the skin after extractions and enhance the glow. Adding red light after a peel can help soothe the skin and support recovery.

If you are already booking a facial, ask us whether LED would benefit your skin that day.

LED versus laser: what is the difference?

People sometimes confuse LED with laser, but they are very different:

  • Laser delivers concentrated light energy at a single wavelength to create a specific effect, such as targeting hair follicles. It produces heat and may require downtime.
  • LED delivers gentle, non-heating light over a wider area to support natural processes. It has no downtime and no risk of burning.

That makes LED a wonderful complement to more intensive treatments rather than a replacement for them.

Can I use an at-home LED device?

At-home LED masks have become popular, and some clients enjoy them. Professional LED panels, however, are typically more powerful, cover the face more evenly and are used at precise distances and times. If you use an at-home device, think of it as a supplement to professional care rather than an equivalent. We are always happy to discuss what you use at home.

Who should avoid LED light therapy?

LED is very safe, but it may not be suitable if you:

  • Are taking medications that increase light sensitivity
  • Have a history of light-triggered conditions such as certain types of epilepsy or migraines
  • Have certain eye conditions
  • Are pregnant (we will discuss whether it is appropriate)

Always share your health history and medications at your consultation.

Preparing for and caring for your skin after LED

LED requires very little preparation:

  • Come with clean skin, or we will cleanse it for you
  • Let us know about any new medications
  • Avoid known photosensitizing products if advised

After LED, there are no special restrictions. Continue your normal routine, keep your skin hydrated and wear SPF daily. For general guidance, see our pre-care and post-care pages.

LED and seasonal skin in Ontario

During Vaughan winters, many clients experience redness, irritation and a compromised skin barrier from cold air and indoor heating. Red light can help calm that seasonal sensitivity. In summer, when humidity and sunscreen can trigger breakouts, blue light can help keep congestion under control. LED is an easy, year-round treatment that adapts to what your skin needs.

Building an LED plan with other treatments

Here are some examples of how we combine LED at Balanced Beauty:

  • Acne plan: Acne Detox Facial plus blue light, salicylic or mandelic peels, and a simple home routine
  • Anti-aging plan: Peptide Skin Tightening Facial with red light, a seasonal peel, and microneedling for texture
  • Sensitive skin plan: Oxygen RX Acne & Rosacea Facial with red light and a gentle, barrier-focused routine
  • Recovery plan: microneedling followed by red light to support healing

How much does LED light therapy cost in Vaughan?

At Balanced Beauty, red light therapy and blue light therapy each start from $50 per 30-minute session. LED can also be added to many of our facials.

The science behind LED, in plain language

Skin cells contain structures that respond to light, a little like how plants respond to sunlight. When cells absorb specific wavelengths of red light, research suggests they can produce energy more efficiently. That extra energy helps cells carry out their normal jobs, including repair and the production of collagen, the protein that keeps skin smooth and firm.

Red light has also been studied for its ability to reduce markers of inflammation. That is why it is so often used to calm redness and support recovery after more intensive treatments.

Blue light works differently. Acne-related bacteria contain light-sensitive compounds. When those compounds absorb blue light, they produce a reaction that is harmful to the bacteria, helping to reduce their numbers on the skin. Fewer bacteria can mean fewer and less inflamed breakouts over time.

Because LED energy is delivered at low, non-heating levels, it supports these natural processes without damaging the skin's surface. This is what makes LED so gentle and so widely suitable. It is also why consistency matters: rather than forcing a dramatic change in one session, LED nudges the skin in the right direction over a series of treatments. As with all treatments, results vary from person to person.
