Microneedling in Vaughan: Smoothing Acne Scars, Texture and Fine Lines

If you have acne scars, enlarged pores or uneven texture, you have probably tried products that promised to smooth your skin and found they could only do so much. That is because these concerns live below the surface, in the collagen structure of the skin. To change them, you need a treatment that works at that level.

Microneedling is one of the most effective and versatile treatments we offer at our med spa in Vaughan. It uses your skin's own healing response to rebuild collagen exactly where you need it. This guide explains how microneedling works, what it can and cannot do, what recovery looks like, and how to prepare.

What is microneedling?

Microneedling, also called collagen induction therapy, is a treatment that uses a device with very fine, sterile needles to create thousands of controlled micro-channels in the skin. These tiny channels are not deep wounds. They are precise signals that prompt the skin to start its natural repair process.

In response, the skin produces new collagen and elastin, the proteins responsible for firmness, smoothness and elasticity. Over the following weeks and months, this new collagen gradually fills in and softens scars, refines pore size and improves overall texture and tone.

The micro-channels also allow serums applied during treatment to penetrate more effectively than they would on intact skin.

What can microneedling improve?

Microneedling is well suited to:

  • Acne scars, particularly rolling and boxcar scars
  • Uneven texture and rough skin
  • Enlarged pores
  • Fine lines and early signs of aging
  • Dullness and uneven tone
  • Surgical and body scars, with our dedicated scar treatment
  • Back texture and scarring, with our microneedling for the back

Microneedling is not designed to treat active acne. If you are currently breaking out, we will focus on clearing your skin first with facials, peels or LED, then move to microneedling once things are calm.

How microneedling works over time

One of the most important things to understand about microneedling is that collagen takes time to build. The full effect of a single session develops over roughly four to six weeks, and the cumulative effect of a series continues to improve for months afterward.

You may notice a healthy glow within days, as the skin renews. Changes in scars and texture are gradual. That is why taking photos at your first visit is so helpful: comparing them a few months later often shows more change than you notice in the mirror day to day. Results vary from person to person.

How many sessions will I need?

Most clients benefit from three to six sessions, spaced about four to six weeks apart. Deeper or more extensive scarring often needs more sessions, while texture and glow concerns may need fewer. After your initial series, a maintenance session once or twice a year can help sustain results.

What to expect during your appointment

A microneedling appointment at Balanced Beauty usually takes about an hour.

  1. Consultation and assessment. We look at your skin and discuss your goals and history.
  2. Cleansing. The skin is thoroughly cleansed and prepared.
  3. Numbing. A topical numbing cream is applied to keep you comfortable.
  4. Treatment. The device is moved across the skin in a careful pattern, with depth adjusted for each area.
  5. Serum and soothing. Hydrating, calming products are applied.
  6. Aftercare guidance. You leave with clear instructions for the next few days.

With numbing, most clients describe the sensation as a light vibration or mild scratching. Bonier areas like the forehead can feel a little more noticeable.

Recovery: what to expect

Recovery from microneedling is usually quick, but it is helpful to plan around it.

  • Day 1: skin looks pink to red, similar to a sunburn, and may feel warm and tight.
  • Days 2 to 3: redness fades significantly. Skin may feel dry or slightly rough.
  • Days 3 to 5: light flaking may occur as the skin renews.

Most people are comfortable returning to work within 24 to 48 hours. If you have an important event, schedule microneedling at least a week before.

Aftercare instructions

Aftercare makes a real difference to your results and comfort.

  • Avoid makeup for at least 24 hours
  • Use only gentle cleanser and the recommended soothing products
  • Avoid retinoids, exfoliating acids and vitamin C for several days
  • Skip workouts, saunas and swimming for 48 hours
  • Wear SPF 30 or higher every day and avoid the sun
  • Do not pick or scrub flaking skin
  • Sleep on a clean pillowcase the first night

Complete instructions are on our post-care page.

How to prepare

To prepare for microneedling:

  • Stop retinoids and strong acids three to five days before
  • Avoid sun exposure and tanning for two weeks before
  • Do not wax or use hair removal creams on the area for a week before
  • Tell us if you are prone to cold sores, as you may need preventive care
  • Come with clean skin and no makeup if possible

See the full checklist on our pre-care page.

Who should not have microneedling?

Microneedling is not recommended if you:

  • Have active acne, infection or cold sores in the area
  • Are pregnant
  • Have used isotretinoin in the past six months
  • Have certain skin conditions such as active eczema or psoriasis in the area
  • Have a history of keloid scarring
  • Have a recent sunburn

We review your health history carefully at every consultation.

Microneedling for surgical and body scars

Microneedling is not only for the face. Our Microneedling for Surgical Scars / Body Scars treatment can help soften the appearance of scars from surgeries such as C-sections, as well as other body scars, once they are fully healed. We also offer Microneedling on the Back for texture and acne scarring on the back. The process and recovery are similar, with depth adjusted for the area.

Microneedling versus chemical peels

Both treatments improve texture and tone, but they work differently:

  • Chemical peels exfoliate the surface and are excellent for pigmentation, acne and dullness.
  • Microneedling works deeper to rebuild collagen, making it more effective for scars and pores.

Many clients benefit from both, scheduled carefully so the skin has time to recover between treatments. We will design a plan that combines them safely if it makes sense for you.

Is microneedling safe for all skin tones?

Yes. Unlike some heat-based treatments, microneedling does not rely on light or heat to target pigment, so it is generally well suited to a wide range of skin tones. Careful technique and good sun protection afterward help reduce the risk of pigmentation changes.

How much does microneedling cost in Vaughan?

At Balanced Beauty, microneedling starts from $350 per session, with microneedling for surgical or body scars from $350 and microneedling on the back from $400. During your consultation, we will recommend a realistic number of sessions for your goals so you can plan with confidence.

Supporting your results at home

Microneedling starts the collagen-building process, but what you do at home in the months that follow helps protect and extend those results.

Sun protection is non-negotiable. UV exposure breaks down collagen and can darken scars and marks. Wear a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every day, including cloudy winter days in Vaughan, and reapply when you are outdoors.

Support your skin barrier. A gentle cleanser and a nourishing moisturizer keep the skin calm and hydrated while it renews. Healthy, hydrated skin heals more efficiently.

Reintroduce actives slowly. Once your skin has fully recovered, typically after about a week, we may recommend reintroducing ingredients like vitamin C, peptides or retinoids to support collagen. Introduce them one at a time so you can see how your skin responds.

Be patient and consistent. Collagen remodelling continues for months after each session. Keeping to your recommended treatment schedule makes a meaningful difference.

Healthy habits help. Adequate sleep, hydration, a balanced diet and not smoking all support the skin's ability to repair itself.

We will recommend a simple routine tailored to your skin at the end of each appointment. If what you already use is working, we will tell you to keep using it.

Frequently asked questions

Does microneedling hurt?

With topical numbing, most clients find it very manageable.

When will I see results?

You may notice a glow within a week. Changes in scars and texture develop over four to six weeks and continue across your series.

Can I go back to work the next day?

Many clients do, though skin may still look slightly pink. Plan for 24 to 48 hours of visible redness.

Is microneedling good for large pores?

Yes. Building collagen around the pore can help it appear smaller and more refined.
